Today on Tumblr, I asked you what ridiculous things scared you growing up on TV, movies, or video games. Your responses were hilarious and relatable, as all good content is! I’m very new to this, but if this segment goes well, I’ll absolutely be doing more in the future. So, here’s SPYRET ASKS Episode 1!!

(if I can improvise and call a tv ad a “movie” or related thereto) one channel once aired an ad for a fever medication which started with the protagonist walking into a house with thunder blaring outside, and he saw his parents behind a curtain, but when he opened it they were either giraffes or zebras (humanoid btw). It cuts to a normal medical ad read after this, but before that, he proceeded to scream so loud that I got scared shitless every time I saw the start of the ad. (oh and, if that didn’t count. Uh. I was terrified of that one episode of Dr Who with the gas masks and the Ninth Doctor. Freaked me the FUCK out the last time I saw it.)

Ads absolutely count. I read this and I was desperate to know what you were talking about, so I tried to look it up… absolutely nothing at all on this?? Maybe I shouldn’t have bombarded YouTube’s search bar with “fever medication ad giraffes zebras”. But I’d be terrified, too, especially if they just brushed past it like that. And for the second thing, Doctor Who comes up a lot in here. That’s a crazy traumatizing show. I have to agree.

Ok this is a long list because I was a scaredy cat as a kid
That one episode of Kipper with the Dragon on the moon.
There was one episode of Fraggle Rock where the main characters all froze or turned to stone or something, idr, but it scared me into avoiding and then forgetting the show until 2023(i think)
A skit in the Alice Cooper episode of The Muppets featuring these like,,,, teeth? I think?
The Doctor Who serial “The Arc In Space”, I still haven’t seen it in full years later
The entire Horrible Histories TV show(and the books too tbh)
The entirety of the show River Monsters(which sucked bc my brothers loved it)
And I was too scared to ever watch any movies lol
— Spyret’s response —
Some of these make sense to me, but I want to ask about Kipper and Fraggle Rock and the Muppet Show… I can’t blame you at all! Truly! I did ask for the ridiculous ones! But I do remember that episode from Fraggle Rock, and it was more sad to me than scary, but nevertheless, I count it as relatable.

Back when I was like 7 or something, I watched the Jumanji (the 1995 original, really good, the sequels butchered it) and at one point there was a scene where the protagonists come to their home and it’s flooded and there’s alligators in the water. I was deathly afraid of that scene, literally had to turn around and bury my face in a cushion, and like ofc it’s a scary situation but the movie didn’t even linger on it. I think it was the first time I saw an alligator not as a drawing?
— Spyret’s response —
I actually took the time to rewatch Jumanji because of this response. With Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst? It actually is amazing, and way better than any of the other Jumanji movies. I was more scared of the evil poacher guy who looks like Alan Parrish’s dad growing up than anything else, but when I saw the alligators again today, I had to agree that any kid watching it would be scared, because my young brother and sister freaked out. Did you grow up to also be scared of alligators in general?
So, the reason I asked this funny question is because I was reminded of my youth, when I was about 11 or 12. It was before I actually got into UNDERTALE, and I was accidentally spoiled about a certain big boss fight with a skeleton. Because of the ending dialogue… like, his very last words after he walked off screen… I assumed that Sans’ brother, Papyrus, was this evil terrifying villain. And it didn’t help after I read the comments section of the video I was watching. “Sans going to avenge his brother is so noble!! He’s not lazy anymore!!!” “Any Disbelief fans? Papyrus could wipe the floor with the human!” “Papyrus would have used those blasters as his special attack!” So I was under the impression, as a dumb child who hadn’t played the game yet, that Papyrus was going to kill me badly, and worse than Sans.
Well, of course, when I played the game and remembered that Papyrus was actually in this one, I watched him appear on screen and got stuck on his very first dialogue box. You know, the, “YOU KNOW WHAT’S ‘SUP, BROTHER!!!!” I had a very Underfell Papyrus first impression of him, I hate to say it. But I didn’t want to watch him continue talking, so I stuck my Switch under my pillow and panicked for a good long while. You know how the story goes, though, I ended up loving him and apologizing for being scared of him… guess that goes to show, UNDERTALE required an extensive reading comprehension skill I didn’t quite have yet.
Thanks for sending in your responses! Honestly, I enjoyed doing this very much. We should do it again sometimes! Be sure to subscribe if you haven’t already! I have surgery tomorrow… yay… so you’re either going to get the worst post ever or no post at all.
Until next time! ❤
