No music with this blog post… my laptop needs fixed. One morning after I got back to school, my laptop just would not turn on. And the one I currently have sucks. It can’t even run the browser well enough to last. I hope I get it back soon, but for now, try to live with this horrible situation as much as you can…
Well, you read the title correctly. We all know I’m an actor, right? I was recently cast in a production I really wanted to be in, and I’ve got a pretty big role. The movement in this show is very demanding. It features women, genderqueer individuals and women of color pretty heavily. I have to throw myself across the stage very frequently, I have to climb a fifteen-foot tall cliff, I have to throw rope and pull full-grown people to me all while holding a metal frame for an hour and 30 minutes… but the most demanding part is the thing you already know. I have to remove my pants on stage.
The script demands it, so I have no qualms with it. It’s a historical piece, and this happened historically, with a man removing his pants to save his one-armed boss on the edge of a cliff. The playwright apparently didn’t care too much about the historical accuracy, except in that moment. If I don’t take off my pants, the show’s integrity is undermined, and we have failed her. One of the hurdles we had from day one, before we even had a stage, was me taking my pants off and saving my one-armed boss on the edge of a cliff.
We’re not hurting for money at all. We have the cliff, and we have pants. The issue was deciding how to do it in a way that didn’t hurt me, hurt the other actress in the scene, or depict me indecently. So, not only am I wearing a strange set of overalls with five buttons and suspenders that could stretch to infinity, but I’m wearing this thin, flimsy, barely humanizing white suit underneath. That’s the plan, anyway, but we haven’t done much of that yet.
What we have done is rehearse it with my pair of “Rehearsal Pants”. I have to remove my boots, remove my bag, take my pants off, and swing it over the side of a cliff in the span of four sentences. My “Rehearsal Pants” are easy to remove, sure, but the amount of times I’ve nearly removed my “Actual Pants” on stage in front of all my peers… let’s just say it’s a good thing we haven’t shown this to an audience yet.
The show is going very well! It’ll be entirely done in the beginning of October, and then… well, I know we’ve been hurting for blog posts at the moment. But my hope is that I’ll have an interesting story to tell from the Undertale Symphony concert I’m attending on the 21st of next month!
And, Undertale’s birthday came and went. Hope your celebrations were a blast… I really need my laptop back.
Until next time. ❤
